A useful question
What would change our minds?
Name the measurement, test, source, or calculation that could distinguish the competing explanations.
Independent judgment. Accountable work.
Independent does not mean unanswerable.
The freedom to exercise judgment belongs beside the obligation to examine it.
Scrutiny can strengthen the work.
A colleague may notice a weak assumption. A reviewer may require a clearer calculation. A team may reject a proposal after examining it. None of those events, by itself, establishes misplaced suspicion or improper interference.
Keep the grounds of disagreement visible.
Ask which technical proposition is disputed, what evidence could resolve it, and who has authority to decide. Distinguish a design review from a personnel matter, and each of those from an allegation of wrongdoing.
A useful record
What remains unresolved?
Preserve uncertainty and dissent without pretending that either decides the matter.
Innovation needs an honest return.
When an idea is declined, a reasoned answer is more useful than a characterization of its author. When a concern is raised, its technical substance still needs a disposition. The person and the proposition are not the same record.
